Policies
THIS IS A LONG MEMO. HOWEVER, TO BE ABLE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THIS SERVICE, YOU ARE ASKED TO READ THE ENTIRE MEMO. PLEASE SAVE THIS FILE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
To subscribe to the Health Education services, you must read and agree to abide by all the policies and procedures of the HEDIR.
Definitions:
The HEDIR.org is actually a series of activities.
The HEDIR List is a mechanism in which one can receive emails that are sent from all subscribers. We have approximately 1,700 subscribers to the list and depending on the day, one may receive nothing to days when one will receive several such messages.
The HEDIR BLOG is a different mechanism in which individuals can post comments on-line at the HEDIR.org site. People can then comment regarding such posts. All HEDIR.org subscribers will be able to POST new blogs and comments on existing blogs. The difference from the HEDIR is that this blog will not be automatically sent over the HEDIR List, so individuals may need to visit the HEDIR.org site to observe such blogs. There will be an opportunity for groups of people, who have a specific interest, to create their own blog site and to share information that may not be relevant to all members of the HEDIR. For example, if you are wanting a discussion among those individuals who are only into alcohol education initaitves, a blog can be created that will allow you to share such thoughts with those individuals with similar interests.
PURPOSE:
- it provides an electronic directories of health educators throughout the world–one can search by name, state, or professional interests
- an electronic communications system for news of interest to professionals and students in the field of health education (referred to as the listserv or a list), blog, wiki and other electronic formats.
The directory is open, free of charge, to all full-time health education professionals and doctoral students in health education. To be listed read this entire memo and then go to http://hedir.org/wp-signup.php to complete the form.
This database is available on the world-wide web. Go to http://hedir.org/members.
TO SUBSCRIBE
The listserv (list) is an electronic mechanism in which one can send memos to all subscribers instantly with just one memo. By addressing the memo to the list address, it will be sent to all health educators who subscribe to this list. This list is called HEDIR list. The HEDIR list is a vehicle in which we can share thoughts, ideas, job announcements, conferences (and calls for papers), requests for ideas, etc. It is to be used to help health educators communicate more effectively and efficiently. The HEDIR list is not for personal communications, but rather announcements of general importance to all subscribers. The HEDIR list is different from the directories. Not everybody listed in the directories will be on the HEDIR list. On the other hand, not everybody on the HEDIR list are health educators. Let me explain:
If you do not meet the qualifications to be listed in the directory (for example, you are not a health educator or a graduate student in health education), you can still request to be added to the listserv. You will receive all correspondence from among all participants in this listserv. There are many people who are not health educators, but who have a vested interest in the profession. If for some reason you want to be dropped from the HEDIR LIST, you must send a memo to me asking to be dropped. UNLESS YOU SPECIFY, YOUR NAME WILL STILL BE LISTED IN THE DIRECTORY and subscribed to the HEDIR.org page. What this means is that you will not receive messages received from the HEDIR list, but others will still be able to locate you and send you personal memos. In addition, you can post comments to HEDIR Blogs.
To subscribe to the HEDIR listserv and to be considered for inclusion in the HEDIR Directory, go to the following URLs and complete the requested info:

SENDING MESSAGESOVER THE HEDIR LIST
You can send a message simultaneously to EVERYONE who is a HEDIR subscriber. To email a message across the system to all subscribers, simply send the email to: HEDIR-L@SIU.EDU. Note that you MUST send this from an email that matches EXACTLY what you are subscribed to. For example, note these two emails: toker@siu.edu and toker@saluki-mail.siu.edu. Although one can receive emails via both systems, the HEDIR sees them as two distinct emails. Thus, it is possible that you can receive HEDIR messages from either emails, but only the one you are registered for (i.e., toker@siu.edu) will allow you to send the email. If you send a message to the HEDIR from toker@saluki-mail.siu.edu it will be rejected.
Also note that if you want to send a message to an INDIVIDUAL subscriber, use their own email address listed in the HEDIR directory. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT CONCEPT TO REMEMBER!! ANYTHING YOU SEND VIA THE LISTSERV WILL BE SENT TO EVERYBODY ON THE LIST. DO NOT USE THE LISTSERV AS A MEANS TO SEND PRIVATE MESSAGES…MAKE SURE YOU USE THE INDIVIDUAL’S EMAIL ADDRESS. There is still much debate on the privacy of such messages via e-mail. Although I’m not in a position to discuss such legalities, it is my opinion that anything sent via the HEDIR list is public domain information, and by stating something you are releasing your rights to privacy about that particular memo. On the other hand, anything sent to somebody at their personal e-mail address should be considered completely confidential and not shared with others without the permission of the sender.
An issue related to this is my role as a censor. I will not serve as a censor to this list or the blog. What that means is that somebody may send something that you don’t like. I will not put myself in a position as a censor nor will I be expected to put myself into that role.
Finally, if you use a ‘Vacation Notification’ on your email it is possible that this message will be sent to the entire list. If that happens, I will ‘unsubscribe’ you. When you get back I’ll ‘re-register’ you. You’ll also get a personal email from me explaining that this has been done. Nothing personal–we just don’t want a lot of emails sent reminding people that you are on vacation (especially since the rest of us are hard at work!
NETIQUETTE
This service is most efficient when subscribers are fully aware of how to use their personal e-mail systems, and when they are aware of the rules and regulations of this listserv. People respond to issues of importance…please feel free to do so. If a particular person asks for some advice, in most instances, please respond to that person via his/her private e-mail address. However, sometimes the information you share with that person may be of value to everybody. Again, feel free to share that with the HEDIR list. You will receive many messages each day…many of which will be of no interest to you. That is the nature of the listserv. If you don’t like what you are reading, you can either delete the message, or unsubscribe. Don’t get irritated just because you don’t like what some people are saying. Do become irritated at people who abuse the system by sending private memos via the HEDIR list. I get upset at that myself.
An example of what not to send via HEDIR:
To: Sam Somebody
From: Matilda Marvelous
Subject: Something
Sam, let’s have dinner when I see you at the next conference. Love the story about the poodles.
The above example in red is an inappropriate memo to send via HEDIR. Such messages should send such a memo to Sam’s personal e-mail address.
What is appropriate is as follows:
To: Sam Somebody
From: Matilda Marvelous
Subject: Something
Sam, per your recent request on the HEDIR. I too experienced the same problems with our schools. In my state, I contacted the local board and asked to speak with the chairperson personally. Also, the latest Journal of XXX had an interesting article on dealing with principals. Does anybody else have any other ideas?
This, in my opinion, is an appropriate use of the HEDIR list. Although it was focused at Sam, it may be of value to other subscribers.
Another example of an inappropriate/appropriate response:
Appropriate:
To: Jane Somebody
From: Matilda Marvelous
Subject: Something
Jane, I must really indicate that I disagree with your ideas. My experiences have been just the opposite. I’m curious to know why you believe what you said.
Inappropriate:
To: Jane Somebody
From: Matilda Marvelous
Subject: Something
“Jane, you ignorant slut.” Your attitudes toward that group of people reveals your lack of intelligence. You need to grow up.
The red above, with the quotes from the famous Saturday Night Live sketch (featuring Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin), crosses the line in personal insults and will result in immediate removal from the HEDIR. You can disagree, but do it professionally and responsibly.
ARCHIVES
The Arhived link on the main page provides a list of all HEDIR messages since its inception in 1994. The messages are archived exactly as received, with the only modifications being the elimination of some header information. If you send something over the HEDIR, it will be archived.
Role of Non-health educators
The HEDIR listserv does allow non-health educators to participate on the listserv. The book publishing world has the most such individuals. These individuals tend to join the listserv to observe what is going on in the health education world. It is preferred that their role remain one as a passive participant–basically observe what is going on. However, there may be the occasion in which a book publisher would like to participant. To avoid the HEDIR from becoming a book publishing advertisement listserv, the book publishing participants have identified the following basic strategies for their involvement with the HEDIR listserv.
- Never respond directly to the list when recommendations for texts are requested. Instead, respond directly to the individual requesting information.
- Do not use the listserv as a means of requesting reviewers, focus group members, or workshop attendees. Instead, observe and note the responses of members to posts to develop reviewer candidates. Or, review the archives for other leads. If you have a health educator running your workshop, that person could post an announcement to the list.
- Do not use the listserv to announce publication of your materials. Authors can do so if they are members of the HEDIR, but publishers are asked to purchase banners to announce new books. Publishers can contact Michaela Conley (michaela@hpcareer.net) to arrange for a ‘packaged’ deal to announce new books.
- If in doubt, contact Dr. Kittleson.
Advertising on the HEDIR
ADVERTISING JOBS ON THE HEDIR IS A FEE BASED SERVICE
The e-mail services and HEDIR have been operating for many years now, all at no cost to you the subscriber. Nearly 2,000 health educators are subscribed and for the past 15 years over 30,000 messages have been delivered. It is one of the best ways for health educators to communicate among themselves. It is my intent that there will never be a charge to subscribe to the HEDIR, however, the amount of time it takes to monitor the HEDIR has become an enormous drain on my time and energy. Thus, effective January 1, 2000 the HEDIR has initiated the following advertising policies.
- Effective January 1, 2000, no advertising of any kind will be permitted over the HEDIR. The one exception is those universities and/or organizations that are advertising health education/promotion positions. The fee for a one-time job announcement over the HEDIR will be $450.00. Besides the listing of the job via the HEDIR, the job listing will be archived in the HEDIR Archives. * In addition to advertising to 1,800 plus individuals on the HEDIR, this job opportunity will also be processed through the HPCAREER.NET system, an email & web based service for the health promotion profession. This job search has nearly 10,000 candidates who have subscribed to receive job announcements, real-time.
- Any companies desiring to promote their products and/or services can do so over the HEDIR by “renting” a banner on the HEDIR. The banner is a single line, interactive message that will appear on all HEDIR messages. These interactive messages will allow the reader to “click” and go to the URL selected. Banners are placed on the top or bottom of each message. Adverting Rates for the HEDIR can be found at http://hedir.hpcareer.net/index.jsp.
For more information for advertising on the HEDIR contact: Michaela Conley, Principal HPCAREER.NET, llc (www.hpcareer.net); 9622 Basket Ring Rd., Columbia, MD 21045; Voice: (410) 715-2268; Fax: (413) 653 2943
Please note that the HEDIR has final determination on whether an advertisement will be permitted on the HEDIR banner
Attachments
Effective June 1, 2008 the HEDIR will allow individuals to send attachments. We ask that you minimize the amount of attachments and the size of attachments. A complaint form will be available for people who have received excessive amounts of attachments or have received inappropriate materials. That complaint form can be found at http://www.kittle.siu.edu/subscriptions/complaints.htm.
The HEDIR Blog
Other services are now in place, including the HEDIR Blog. The HEDIR Blog is a way to post a written comment about an issue of relevance with an opportunity for people to respond. This is DIFFERENT than the HEDIR list in that it is not sent over the HEDIR listserv. Remember, not everybody who is subscribed to HEDIR.org receives messages from the HEDIR list. The HEDIR.org site can be observed by anybody; thus the HEDIR blog is a way to get the message out to the rest of the world. Note: only HEDIR.org subscribers can post to the HEDIR Blog and only HEDIR.org subscribers can ‘comment’ to such posts.
HEDIR Twitter
You can follow messages via Twitter (or you can follow Dr. Kittleson) by going to twitter.com/TheHEDIR or to twitter.com/kittleson and registering and ’sign up’ to follow either or both.
Gift Giving
All services with the HEDIR are free (with exception of job advertisements). All gifts would be greatly appreciated and acknowledged. For more information, go to www.hedir.org/support.htm
Hope you enjoy this service. I thank you for your patience and support through all of these years.
