Dr. Gupta as Surgeon General

President-elect Obama has made a couple of controversial nominations for cabinet posts and other high offices in his impending administration. Dr. Gupta, a neurosurgeon with practice privileges at Grady Hospital in Atlanta and an academic appointment at Emory University, is likely to be supported by professional health education organizations and the American Public Health Associations. This nomination may not be supported by others.

Dr. Gupta is a media celebrity. He is a frequent medical advisor appearing on CBS and CNN news shows. Some reporters are suggesting that Dr. Gupta will be the highest profile surgeon general ever. It is hard to imagine anyone in this position having a more positive effect on health education than Dr. C. E. Koop.
